All equipment requires an access class to use. Some equipment requires additional courses. Those who believe they are proficient in an area can opt for a private proficiency test.
MACCLab Orientation– Free – All individuals who desire to use the makerspace must go through the orientation and safety class. This 30-minute class gives an overview on how to safely use the makerspace as a whole along with the policies and procedures of membership. The rules for use of the computers, cutting table, ideation space and kitchen are included in this class. Successful completion of this class and signing the liability waiver will allow an individual the opportunity to apply for membership.
Access classes – Use of equipment requires an access class. Group classes are offered at least once a month. Some private classes are available by appointment (at a per hour rate). Students are required to show proficiency and an understanding of safe operation to receive machine authorization. Those who believe they are proficient in an area can opt for a private proficiency test with a qualified instructor to receive their authorization. Classes can be taken by members and nonmembers. Members receive a 30% discount on all classes. Though nonmembers can take classes, they cannot use the equipment outside of the class without becoming members or purchasing a day pass. The ability to take classes as nonmembers allows individuals to be introduced to the makerspace prior to making the monthly commitment.
Age Requirements: Individuals 11 and 12 years old may take certain classes, as a non-member, if their parent or guardian is also enrolled in said class, though they will be unable to return to use this equipment outside of class until the age of 13. Classes available to those 11 and 12 years old are limited to 3D Printing, Laser Cutting, Vinyl Cutting, and Heat Transfer.
Individuals 13 to 15 may take a class with a parent or guardian also enrolled in said class and may then use the equipment as long they are accompanied by said parent or guardian.
Individuals 16+ may take classes on their own, but minors will need a signed minor liability waiver prior to attending the class.
Members, students, and guests must wear closed toe shoes at all times when in the makerspace.
CAD
- Adobe for Laser Engraving – $60 nonmember, $42 member – 2 hour class introducing students to Adobe Illustrator with a focus on how to design, convert, and prepare files for laser engraving and cutting. We will start with picture files such as jpg and png, and work with you to create a file that can be laser engraved, scored, or cut. This class aims to introduce students to the software and design development, it does not authorize the student to use the laser cutter/engravers.
3D Printing Classes
- Intro to 3D Printing – $80 nonmember, $56 member – 2-hour access class introducing the basics of 3D printing as well as the safety protocols and uses. All materials are provided within the class fee. This is the only class needed for use of Ultimaker. An additional class is needed for access to the Form 3 Resin and Stratasys printers.
- Form 3 Resin Printing – $80 nonmember, $56 member – 2-hour access class introducing the Form 3 resin printer as well as the safety protocols and uses. All materials are provided within the class fee. The pre-requisite for this class is successful completion of Intro to 3D Printing.
- Stratasys 3D Printing – $40 nonmember, $30 member – 1-hour access class introducing the Stratasys printer as well as the safety protocols and uses. The pre-requisite for this class is successful completion of Intro to 3D Printing.
Laser Cutting Classes
- Intro to Laser Cutting – $80 nonmember, $56 member – 2-hour access class introducing the Universal Systems Laser Cutters as well as safety protocols, and uses. All materials are provided within the class fee. Additional training in Coreldraw will be available at a later date.

Woodworking Classes
- Intro to Woodworking – $100 nonmember, $70 member – 3-hour access class introducing the woodshop equipment, safety protocols, and uses. The proficiency of the students will be tested through the creation of a wood project. All materials are provided within the class fee.
Metalworking Classes
- Basic Metalworks – $60 nonmember, $42 member – 2-hour access class gives a general overview of the metalworking processes. Students will gain an understanding of the basic metal shop equipment, basic machine operation, safety protocols, metal-fabrication methods, industry applications, and problem solving. This is the only class needed for use of the shears, vertical band saw, drill press, brake, grinder and vise. All materials are provided within the class fee. An additional class is needed for access to the lathe and milling machines.
- Lathe or Mills– Once you have completed Basic Metalworks, private instruction on the lathe or milling machines is available upon request. Reach out to makerspace@macc.edu for pricing and scheduling.
Textile and Embroidery Classes
- Basics of Industrial Sewing – $80 nonmember, $56 member – 3-hour access class introducing the home sewing, industrial walking foot, and sergers, basic operations and uses. This class is focused on working with thick materials. The proficiency of the students will be tested through the creation of a tote bag. All materials are provided within the class fee. Individuals can reach out to makerspace staff to learn how to change serger thread, wind a bobbin on the industrial machine or change industrial feet. These may not be covered in the class.
- Intro to Machine Embroidery – $70 nonmember, $49 member – 2.5-hour access class introducing the Melco Bravo embroidery machine as well as safety protocols, and uses. The proficiency of the students will be tested through the creation of an embroidered patch. All materials are provided within the class fee.
- Intro to Longarm Quilting – $50 nonmember, $35 member – 2-hour access class introducing the HandiQuilter Simply Sixteen as well as safety protocols, and uses. The proficiency of the students will be tested through the creation of a small quilted tapestry. All materials are provided within the class fee.
Electronics Classes
- Intro to Electronics – $70 nonmember, $49 member – This 2-hour access class introduces the electronics station as well as safety protocols, and uses. The proficiency of the students will be tested through the creation of a small project. All materials are provided within the class fee. An additional class is needed for access to the PCB Mill.
CNC Router Classes
- Intro to Shapeoko Router – $70 nonmember, $49 member – 2.5-hour access class introducing the Shapeoko router as well as safety protocols, and uses. Take your woodworking to a new level! All materials are provided within the class fee. Additional training in i2R routers, V-Carve and Coreldraw will be available at a later date.
Vinyl Crafts Classes
- Intro to Vinyl Cutting – $50 nonmember, $35 member – 2-hour access class introducing the GCC vinyl cutters and the Cricut Maker machine a well as safety protocols, and uses. The proficiency of the students will be tested through the creation of a MACCLab tote and chalkboard sign. All materials are provided within the class fee. Additional courses in cricut use will be available at a later date.
Heat Press Classes
- Intro to Heat Transfers – $70 nonmember, $49 member – 2.5-hour access introducing the heat transfer software and printer along with the heat press uses and safety protocols. The proficiency of the students will be tested through the creation of a MACCLab mug and tea towel. All materials are provided within the class fee.
Mat and Frame Classes
- Intro to Framing – $70 nonmember, $49 member – 2-hour access class introducing the picture frame and mat cutting tools as well as safety protocols, and uses. The proficiency of the students will be tested through the creation of a photo frame. All materials are provided within the class fee.
